Lefty Lew Tendler is still ranked as the best professional boxer to never win a title, even though his last bout was in the 1920s. So what was a famous lightweight/welterweight supposed to do once he hung up the gloves? Lew opened a high class steak joint and cocktail lounge on Broad Street between Walnut & Locust in 1932 and it was a big hit for many years. All the guys and dolls and characters came to Tendler's to see and be seen. Business was so good Lew also opened joints in Miami Beach and Atlantic City. They don't make stand up guys like Lew Tendler anymore, or hot spots like Tendler's.
