In 1920 Gaspare and Josephine Genuardi started selling fruits and vegetables from their farm in Norristown, Pa and business was very good, so good in fact that five out of their nine children joined the family business. By 1954 Genuardi family opened their first supermarket and under the operation of the five Genuardi brothers it grew to become a major and much loved chain in the Philadelphia area. Alas, the family sold out to Safeway Supermarkets in 2000 and the Genuardi Super Market name soon disappeared. Eighty years was a great run but they are missed!.
