It was a warm Thursday night on the 5th of June in 1952 when our area's own Jersey Joe battled Cincy's Ezzard Charles for the World's Heavyweight Championship in front of over 30,000 frenzied fans at the old Municipal Stadium at Broad & Pattison. This was the fourth and final bout between the two and Jersey Joe got a disputed decision in the 15 rounder. Charles wasn't up to the challenge and for years boxing insiders intimated that the fix was in. Oh well.
