If you were a Philly school kid in 1960 how can you forget the October day when JFK'S motorcade whisked him on a neighborhood tour of South, West, Southwest and Northeast Philly! The strategy was to pass as many schools as possible so impressionable kids would run home and tell their parents that an actual presidential candidate was in the neighborhood. This spurred a Students for Kennedy movement in Philly public schools. We weren't old enough to vote, but we were smart enough to recognize a charismatic guy when we saw one--not hard when you're running against Nixon--and we could stump on the home front. We fondly remember the motorcade passing Longstreth Elementary at 58th & Willows!
