Description

This competently remastered CD from the Dutch re-issue label "Archives of Jazz" features the following All-Stars line-up:
Louis Armstrong
trombone: Jack Teagarden
clarinet: Barney Bigard
piano: Earl Hines
bass: Arville Shaw
drums: Big Sid Catlett (Cozy Cole substitutes on one number)
The recordings are radio airshots from various Philadelphia studio dates dates in 1948 and 1949. Most of the performances display considerable engagement and vigor with good solos: Bigard is prominent (e.g. "Body and Soul") and sounds as you might expect the Barney Bigard of Ellington to sound when he isn't playing with Ellington; Teagarden is less represented but extraordinary (as usual) when he is; Louis is dominant throughout and in most cases quite affecting. Only Earl Hines is something of a disappointment, but fans of that great musician are accustomed to his occasional withdrawals.
