From Fairmount Park to 33rd Street, Oxford to Lehigh, the streets of Strawberry Mansion housed thousands of homes and businesses and served as the center of Jewish life in mid-century Philadelphia. There were the schools like Blaine, Stockley and Furness, the shuls like Beth Israel and B'nai Jeshrun, the corner delis and candy shops, the kosher butchers and bakers and butter & eggs stores. There were plenty of places to play, including the world's biggest backyard (Fairmount Park), plus theaters and other pleasurable pursuits. But the most memorable thing about Strawberry Mansion was the people - they made the neighborhood come alive and thrive!
