Description

During the 30s, 40s and 50s the basketball team to beat was Philly's famous Sphas, which was an acronym for South Philadelphia Hebrew Association. The team was founded by the legendary mogul, Eddie Gotlieb, along with Hughie Black and the Passon brothers, and over the years they took on all comers - semi-pro and pro - across the country and usually came out on the winning side. The roster changed over the years, showcasing the best Jewish hoopsters of the day. As the crowds grew in the late 30s and 40s the games were played at the old Broadwood Hotel and were followed by dancing once player Gil Fitch changed from his uniform to bandleader tux and the night changed from sporting event to social hour. What a time it was!
