Philly city kids had the street corners but the suburban kids had the loooooong hilly roads like Baltimore Pike and Marhsall Road which made them perfect for soapbox derbies. Come to think of it, the soapboxes wouldn't have lasted 10 seconds on a city street! That's why we never had derbies. But if you remember the 60s, when the homemade go karts would line up atop Oak Avenue. once the flag dropped they would whiz down Baltimore Pike as fast as a Flash Gordon space ship. Those were the days!
