Description

Back in the dark ages before FM radio, AM stations roamed the dial and in Philly none was more popular than the old WPEN 950. With such broadcast pioneers as Joe Grady & Ed Hurst as the big time hosts of the wildly popular 950 Club, the Mambo Dance Party with Pancho in the Black Sombrero (aka Al Raymond) and Frank Ford, the little studio at 22nd & Walnut owned by the Sylk brothers of SunRay Drug fame hosted scores of bobbysoxers and teens who came to see the latest top entertainers live and in-person while in the air. The studio had a 250-seat auditorium and the radio shows were really shows, but on the radio. Can you imagine Rhianna and other popsters performing live in station studios these days?!?
