Description

Remember when hitting up the corner store on a hot summer day was the best way to cool off in Philly? We were always known as the home of ice cream, but we also put out so many more cool treats like Popsicles, Jack 'n Jill, frozen custard, water ice, push up pops, and our all time favorites--Yosh's Ice Cups! Yosh, aka Dennis Greenstein, was the enterprising son of Phil, proprietor of the iconic Phil's Luncheonette at the corner of 57th & Beaumont. One hot day he was playing around with the big syrup bottles in Phil's and decided to see what happened when he froze a syrupy concoction inside a Dixie cup and then placed a wooden Breyer's ice cream spoon in the center of the cup mid-freeze. The result was the Ice Cup, which soon became a wildly popular summertime treat at the bargain price of a nickel for Southwest Philly neighbors. While Yosh experimented with different flavors, the cherry Ice Cup was the all-time flavorite for the big chill generation. Both Phil's and Yosh's Ice Cups are long gone, but the warm memories live on with this retro tee!
