Did'ja know that the hula hoop craze started in Philly way back in the day? One of the owners of the old Ponnock Toy Company was on an island vacation and saw a calypso dancer entertaining with a big ring around her waste. Hmmm. He came back to Philly and got his toy designers working on a plastic tube prototype that would be fun for kids of all ages. The Hula Hoop was born! Thanks to some well-placed commercials on the wildly popular Sally Starr Popeye Theater program on WFIL-TV the Hula Hoop became a must-have toy sensation overnight and the craze spread across the country. Every few years it becomes popular to a new generation of kids.
