Long before the 76ers and the Warriors the top pro hoops team in town was the Sphas. Originally the South Philadelphia Hebrew Association team the Sphas evolved over the years to feature the best pro players and dominated the old American Basketball League for years. Games were played at the old Broadwood Hotel near Broad & Vine and were followed with dancing to Sphas player and bandleader Gil Fitch's Orchestra.
