Old Philly hipsters who were looking to hear the greatest live music in town back in the 50s flocked to Broad & South, where Pep's was the place to be. On any given night you could encounter on the small stage a Count (Basie), a Duke (Ellington), a Pres (Lester Young) or such great vocalists as Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington and Nancy Wilson. Many of the jazz musicians were local hebesters from South Philly and Strawberry Mansion. It was a phenomenal place to see and hear.
