Just a faded memory now but for many sports fans way back when its was the only game in town! Founded as an American League franchise in 1901 by the legendary Connie Mack the A's had many ups and downs over the years until ultimately leaving Philly for Kansas City after the 1954 season. With Mack managing from 1901 thru 1951 the A's won 9 American League pennants and the World Series in 1910, 11, 13, 29 and 30. In fact, the 1930 team was considered one of the best teams of all time, even better than the 1927 NY Yankees. With great players like Eddie Collins, Chief Bender, Homerun Baker, Ty Cobb, Jimmy Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, Al Simmons and Lefty Grove, the A's prospered in the first 30 years of the 20th century but after that Connie Mack continued to run the franchise on the cheap.
