Description

Not many people remember this but in 1944, after 16 straight losing seasons, new Philadelphia Phillies owner Bob Carpenter hired a marketing maven who felt the moribund franchise was in need of a new nickname with a snazzy mascot. Yeah, that's the ticket! So a contest was held and over 5,000 fans submitted their ideas and a $100 war savings bond was awarded to Mrs. Elizabeth Crooks for coming up with the Blue Jays, which Carpenter claimed symbolized Philadelphia (???) and was a name that commanded respect, because really, when you think of tough birds doesn't Blue Jay come right to mind? After some squawking around the league it was decided that the Phillies would still be known as the Phillies but the Blue Jay would be a sleeve emblem or used on promotional materials. Not surprisingly the team came in last once again and after a combination of fan apathy and anger the Blue Jay flew the coop after the 1944 season. Please note, the ladies long sleeve tee is on backorder
