Description

Legendary Penn football quarterback dabbled in semi-pro football prior to founding the Philadelphia Eagles franchise in the NFL in 1933. The team had mixed results and after falling on hard times Bell became Eagles coach in the late 30s. After selling his interest in the team, Bell briefly served as coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers beginning two games into the 1941 season. In 1946 Bell was named commissioner of the NFL and moved the league offices to Philadelphia, where he served until 1959. Bell was credited with bringing much-needed organization to the league and created many of the rules that are still in play today. He opened the doors to televising games, having a Pro Bowl at the end of every season and fostering mergers with other leagues. Running the league and dealing with the owners had its consequences and Bert Bell died of a heart attack at the age of 64 on October 11, 1959 while sitting in the end zone seats at an Eagles game, which he proudly paid for as always. His impact on the NFL is lasting and his place as father of the Philadelphia Eagles lives on!
