What do you call a group that featured guys named Shikey, Inky, Itzy, Fitchy, Label, Lushy & Moe? Back in the late 30s they were called the wildly popular Philadelphia Sphas, the legendary basketball team atop the professional American Basketball League. Founded in 1919 by the Mogul, Eddie Gottlieb, along with Hughie Black and Harry Passon, the Sphas had a 40 year run until Red Klotz bought the team and renamed them the Washington Generals, traveling the world with the Harlem Globetrotters. The Sphas name was an acronym for South Philadelphia Hebrew Association, and in the late 30s they played most of the home games at the old Broadwood Hotel, located at Broad Street, where for a low admission of fifty cents you could watch the game then dance to the big bands sounds of the Gil Fitch Orchestra, himself a Sphas player, immediately after. It was the best time in town! Color: Schmaltz Our tees are preshrunk 100% ringspun cotton
